Silence. No one said a word after Alex had just confessed. 

There was only the sound of the clock ticking on the wall. It was past ten pm now. The smell of liquor was the perfume in the living room and the rug under the coffee table looked stained with some kind of liquid. 

I kept glancing at Liam, waiting for him to say something but he did not. The suspense was thick. He just kept breathing in deeply, as if he was trying to calm himself. 

“Didn’t you hear me? I said that I was the one that killed your mom. I was the one that was driving, not her.” Alex broke the tense silence. 

“How did it happen? I want to know. How did it happen? Tell me everything.” Liam’s voice was surprisingly calm. He brushed his thumb on his nose and then sniffled. His eyes were glistening with tears and he kept clenching his jaws.
