I glanced at Maddy, who was watching me intently. Her gaze felt almost predatory, but I shrugged it off, chalking it up to my overactive imagination.

“You’re staring,” I said, raising an eyebrow at her.

“Just making sure you’re comfortable,” she replied, her smile widening.

I drained the rest of the glass in one gulp, hoping to drown the uneasy feeling that was building in my gut. Maddy’s eyes gleamed as she watched me.
