Logan's POV

Maddie looked at me, her teasing expression fading into something more serious. More calculating.

And for the first time, she didn’t have a snarky comeback.

I squared my shoulders, ready…desperate…to hear what Maddie had to say.

If there was even the slightest chance that she could tell me how to fix things with Layla, I was willing to listen.

Maddie crossed her arms over her chest, her lips pursing as she studied me. Then, with a sigh, she finally spoke.

“You really want to know what I think?” she asked.

I nodded, clenching my fists at my sides.

She tilted her head, exhaling sharply before giving me a firm, unflinching stare.

“I think,” she began, “the best thing for you to do if you really want me to believe that you’ve changed is simple, Logan.”

I held my breath.

Maddie took a step closer, her expression unreadable. Then she dropped the words like a bomb.

“Leave Layla alone.”
