Maxine’s POV
"You must have been really sad," I said.
"I was but about a week later, one of them showed up at the house. I told them it was a sign and they agreed that I could only keep that one. Best day of my life." He chuckled.
"That was so sweet of them. Is the cat still with you?" I asked.
"She died a few years later but it was fun while it lasted."
"I've never had a pet," I said. "That must have been cool."
"You could get one for a few days to see if it's something you'd like," Nick suggested.
"Maybe I will."
I didn't realize it until I was yawning that we had talked well past midnight. I placed my empty glass on the ground next to where we sat.
"I have work in the morning, Nick," I informed him. "I have to go to bed now."
"I'll walk you back." He offered.
I shook my head. "It's fine. Enjoy the rest of your wine. Thanks for tonight. It was fun." I smiled at him.
