Chapter 181. White Lies

Kaden gave me a ride home from school, but he took off as soon as I stepped inside. I headed straight upstairs, but I had to pause when I heard my dad calling my name.
“It’s past seven o’clock, princess," he said, glancing down at his wristwatch. “What happened? Where have you been?” His voice was firm, the kind he used when he was about to give me a lecture. He wasn't used to me coming home late; usually, I was the one waiting for him in the living room when he got back from work, so I totally got why he was acting this way.
“Sorry, Dad, but I... I had to finish an assignment, and I didn’t know how to do it, so I asked Kaden for help,” I stuttered, realizing I was not great at lying. I had never pulled something like this with him before. “I was with Kaden.”
