He stomped into the yard and stood beside me. My eyes widened in fear.

“Oh, Lucas, you’re here. Can you believe it that…” Britney said, but Brian immediately interrupted her.

“You don’t need to worry about anything you heard. This is a family matter,” Brian said, clearly trying to stop Britney from ruining everything. I was shaking, knowing what he had heard, but his reaction wasn’t too extreme, so I assumed he hadn’t heard the worst of it.

“As far as I am concerned, I am a member of this family. And I am to wed Ariana,” he said angrily as he turned to face Britney.

“And let this be the last time you threaten her or speak to her with any disrespect,” Lucas added.

I was shocked—and at the same time relieved.
