Chapter 68. Daughter of the Devil

“‘What did you say?’” she responded as she turned to look at me with raised eyebrows. I knew she was pretending not to know what was going on, and somehow it pissed me off when she feigned ignorance.

“You know what I am talking about,” I spat out, but my voice came out harsher than I expected. The maids around me gasped in horror as they glanced between us, scared of why I would talk like that. I knew Maria was a woman who commanded respect wherever she went; she was the mother to the mafia boss, one of the most powerful men the world has ever seen, and I was his wife.

“Leave us,” she ordered as she smiled at the maids. One of the things that scared me about her was the way she smiled while she was angry; she always kept a calm face as she spoke, and even her voice sent a shiver up my spine.
