I felt as though cold water had been poured over me, completely catching me off guard with Mateo’s unexpected words. Was he joking or simply toying with my emotions? I couldn’t decipher his intentions, and confusion mingled with frustration within me. It seemed like trouble had an uncanny way of finding its path into my life, leaving me to wonder if I had done something wrong in a past life to deserve such a tumultuous existence.
