Chapter 75. A Growing Distance

I sat in the office of Mayor Thompson, the mayor of Sun city and tried to shut off the scent of stale coffee and aged paper lingering in the air.

The Mayor sat across from me and eyed me wearily. He wore a crisp navy-blue suit, and his fingers drummed lightly on the polished wooden desk as he considered my proposal.

“You’re asking a lot, Alpha Kaelan,” he said finally. “You want me to ensure that no human interferes in werewolf affairs, but in return, you promise that no werewolf will attack humans?”

“Yes,” I said firmly.

He let out a dry chuckle. “How do I know you’ll keep your word?”

I leaned forward, my golden eyes locking onto his. “Let me put it this way, if I break my own side of the bargain, you’ll have the right to call in your forces against my kind. But if humans continue arming rogues or getting involved in our wars, you won’t like what happens next.”

Mayor Thompson tensed, adjusting his tie. “Are you threatening me?”
