Chapter 5. She Is Here

POV Adam

I just wish this would end once and for all.

I left my office and walked to the backyard of the house, passed by a mirror took off my jacket, and adjusted my tie.

Is it getting too hot, or is it just me?

For some reason, my wolf, Jason, was very uneasy, and as much as I thought about it, I couldn’t figure out why.

I arrived at the podium that someone had left for me.

What a great service, I thought wryly.

Here we go.

All the guests had their eyes on me, different alpha wolves with their escorts. I wasn’t nervous, I gave speeches all the time, but today I felt as if something special was going to happen What could it be? I rolled my eyes; if the fact that I was about to choose any female from among the pack to be our Moon wasn’t enough of an unsettling event, I don’t know what else it could be.

I sighed and continued.

“Good evening, alphas and packs; thank you for accepting the invitation. I hope you are enjoying the party.” They all looked at me attentively; many of the females were smiling and flirting with me, causing me to smile.

I never get tired; I buffet and continue.

“It is my duty and obligation as alpha of the Dark Moon pack to inform you all that I am in search of a mate, the future Moon of my pack. I know many of you are concerned that I may leave you without a stable future or heir to lead the pack, so this is one of the reasons I have invited not only leaders but also females from your packs to be our guide and Moon.”

I noticed that most of the leaders with mates looked at me with sadness and sorrow, and I understood the reason for their looks: I would not be lucky enough to have my Luna as my mate.

One of them asked me.

“And what happens when I find your mate, alpha?” asked the alpha.

“Good question, Adam, what happens when we find our mate?” I could hear Jason’s words, that was my wolf’s name, as we are the same person, he inhabits practically my every thought and I his.

“Shut up! You didn’t talk to me all day, so don’t do it now,” I replied angrily.

“One of these days, someone is going to take that stick you have buried up your ass,” Jason growled.

Great, now you’re mad at me too, great, I thought sarcastically.

Just what was missing.

“Well, what I mean is...” The current of a breeze bringing with it the most divine scent floats in my direction, the smell of a torrential rain along with the arrival of spring, an aroma a tinge stinging and sweet at the edges stirs my every sense and reason as a quality sensation spreads through my chest at the clear sign of what that means.

“That’s her, that’s our mate!” shouted Jason in his head.

By the Goddess, I finally found her...

I scanned the crowd for her.

“Look for her and find her,” Jason demanded in my head, and I could only ignore him as I concentrated on her scent.

I started to make my way through the people who, upon seeing my more wolfish than manly expression, turned away, afraid to cross my path. Jason wanted me to transform so he could look for her, but I just didn’t want to scare her when I did.

Then I stopped and saw her, everyone was silent, she had her back to me, but she turned and saw me, her young and beautiful face had an expression of anger and sadness, then she ran like hell.

But what the hell... I thought and ran after her halfway. I transformed myself into a wolf to go faster.

Now that I have found you, I will not leave you. I howled with all my strength; adrenaline was running through my veins, and I could only think of one thing.

You are mine.

POV Megan

We were all in the courtyard listening to the alpha’s speech...I don’t remember his name; I think it was Alan or Adam, I don’t know; I didn’t pay much attention to him; I was on a mission that seemed impossible, to find a fucking way out of this crowd, not even in my twelve” centimeter heels could I see beyond the shoulders of these people, while the alpha spoke.

“Good evening, alphas and packs, thank you for accepting the invitation, I hope you are enjoying the party.”

Blah blah blah

“It is my duty and obligation as alpha of the Dark Moon pack to inform you all that I am in search of a mate, the future Moon of my pack.”

And more blah blah blah.

Who cares about that guy’s love problems?

I heard someone in the audience ask him a question, but I didn’t pay attention.

I couldn’t care less.

By the Goddess, isn’t there a damn exit here? I thought when I still couldn’t find it, suddenly there was a silence that, in my opinion, was appalling.

And now, who died? I thought with sarcasm; I heard people stumbling to give space, but space to whom? I asked myself.

Out of curiosity, I turned around and have you heard that saying, “Curiosity killed the cat?” Well, curiosity killed me instantly without being of any feline species.

And there he was, it was that look he had, the same look I had seen in enough people to want to both fear and loathe him, that made me feel so depressed and yet so angry that I ran like hell far away from him.

I have to get away from him.

Oh Goddess, I don’t want it; I never wanted it, I thought as I ran with all my might. I could already see my freedom and my false independence going down the drain.

No, no, no

NO!

I don’t want this. Damn it!

I could hear him behind me; I peeked out of the corner of my eye and saw him transforming into a huge black wolf, his red eyes never taking their eyes off his prey.

They never failed to see me.

It’s like a goddamn farmhouse in here, my God.

I wanted to cry, but I swallowed my tears; there would be time for that later. I arrived at a small lagoon that was illuminated by the Moon; from where I was, I could see that it was very deep.
