Tobias’ POV

Kieran and Elara left today for their honeymoon. Finally, I’d been waiting to see Kieran laugh without faking it again, and now that he’s gone all heart-eyes and handsy with Elara, he’s starting to look like the guy he used to be. Ten years ago, before life wrecked him. Cheerful. Open. Alive. And with Magnus out of the picture, for now, he can finally breathe.

While they’re off sipping something fruity under the sun, I’m in charge of the pack. That part’s easy. First order of business: border patrol. Keeping the border secure is muscle memory at this point. I took the southern route, my usual routine, except nothing about this morning felt routine. About a quarter mile into the forest, I caught the scent.
