My stomach churned at the sight of them. I had never seen Magnus before, but he had this feeling of familiarity to him, like I had seen him before somewhere, but I couldn’t place it. And just looking at them filled me with disgust and a fury that burned so low in my chest, but I had to swallow it down. I had a war to finish, and I had to play this right.
I dropped my gaze and shifted back as if their presence was suffocating me, and then I summoned the tears. Then I lifted my eyes, letting the tears fall as my eyes darted past them toward the doorway, like I was searching for something, for even the faintest trace of him.
My voice broke as I forced the words out, “Why are you here?” My shoulders curled inward as if bracing for their answer. “Where is Kieran?”
