“Guess what?” Andrew’s mother was standing by the door as soon as he walked in.

“What, mom?” Andrew itched to run upstairs and then drop his office files in his room so he could go to Elaine’s place.

She had told him she would give him the ring by 6 pm right. So, she still had an hour and thirty minutes. And he was yet to hear anything from Melvin about the ring or about Elaine breaking his heart.

“Where’s Melvin?” he asked.

His mother tapped his arm. “I told you to guess something. I can never understand you boys.”

“Fireworks, a new puppy, dad’s found an alternative healing pattern.”

“No. Your grandfather is allergic, and yes, but that’s not the surprise,” his mother said.

She linked her hands with his, pulling him towards the oval room.

“Eh… Mom, I need to freshen up. I have somewhere to be.”

“Wherever it is, it can wait,” his mother said. “We’re having a family dinner.”
