Chapter 42

Shantelle’s POV

Today was going to be a good day. I could feel it. I wasn’t always up by this time, but all I could think about was getting to school and seeing his face. Whatever was happening downstairs with my mama and Reginald, I didn’t want to be a part of it. I couldn’t allow them to ruin my mood. My mood started well, and that’s how I wanted it to stay until I was ready for a change.

“Where were you last night?” Mama asked when she saw me.

She didn’t check on me as often as she did before she started working as a big shot. She didn’t have time anymore, so she came in late, and when she was home early, she always had something important to do. Why was she snooping around my room? What had happened again with Papa and his case…

“Mama, I just went outside,” I told her. “I didn’t think you needed me.”

It was always what I said when I didn’t want to be asked ridiculous questions, but it seemed like I wasn’t going to get out of this easily.
