I watched the Beta move about the small chamber in silence. Since my arrival, he’d continued to check on me more often than the Alpha or the Luna, and though they had assigned me this room, he seemed determined never to leave me unattended for long. I stayed quiet, wary of upsetting him—after all, he had been vicious in the woods when he captured me, and I’d rather not speak than risk inciting his wrath. My heart pounded each time he drew near.
He approached now, carrying a tray of food and water. As he set it down on the low table beside my bed, our gazes locked in a tense, wordless contest.
