Chapter 44. The Pianist’s Heart
The dinner has been cleared up. Rubbing their stomachs, Rachel felt sick about the sudden influx of food in her stomach. Usually, she can only hold a little food when it’s dinner time, and it helps with her sleep at night, too. By the morning, Rachel wouldn’t feel as tired as a girl who runs laps around the fountain.
Mrs. Littlewick complimented about the school with Luther Griffin, making side comments about Rachel, in which she gladly accepted. Rachel drank a little of the wine, and she noticed eyes on her, more like gawking than a stare.
She granted Ezekiel her glance, and he didn’t turn to another woman. He just retrieved the wineglass from his hand and drank from it while staring intensely at her.
It felt wrong, to be honest. Ezekiel and Rachel’s relationship was supposed to be fake.
But it’s getting real. The agreement they had was slowly tearing away its purpose.
Rachel squeezed Luther’s hand below the table, intertwined it, and composed herself.
