Gage’s POV
“This Kate of a woman seems to be playing way too much hide and seek for someone seeking protection from the FBI.” She scoffs, and she’s right, except for ne slight variable.
“Or, she has lost faith in the FBI.” I introduced the other line of thought. “She probably waited for a Witness Security officer as the FBI claimed they would send, alone, scared…” She turns to see the forlorn look on my face, the look of a man who failed. “…and I wasn’t there. If she’s dead now, then it’s my fault.”
“It’s not your fault.”
“Don’t pacify me.”
“I’m not trying to pacify you. I’m trying to get you to reason things logically and not blame yourself for an occurrence whose sequence of events you couldn’t control.” She anesthetizes my self-guilt trip. “There’s me and a total look alike in the same building, a sniper is about to shoot me, and you step in. As far as I’m concerned, you saved who needed to be saved that day.”
