All the while, she gives me an eye that I know quite well. It seems to me that she’s in love with Valentine and is of the opinion that I’m going to steal his attention from her.

I was given those looks a lot in high school and even in college. Girls would eye me down when they spot me talking to either their boyfriend or their crush, especially when we were engrossed in our conversation.
