I’m distracted as I reshelve books in the castle library. My thoughts are far away while I move the book trolley to another aisle and rearrange the books. I can’t even be annoyed at whoever put the books back in the wrong order. There are even books from a different section of the library here, and I don’t care.

All I can think about is my husband who is heading directly into enemy territory without any backup. I know what Rainer is capable of in combat, but he’s still one person against a group of mercenaries. No one even knows how many Blood Takers there actually are. Rainer could be facing dozens of mercenaries.

Footsteps coming closer make me turn and I see Lola with a book in her hand about horticulture. We’re in the romance literature aisle. I glance at the misarranged books and back at her. Despite the heavy eye makeup and red streaks in her hair, I can see the guilt on Lola’s face clearly.
