Lord Gavin reluctantly hands over the Firebird in its cage to Thomas. He does seem regretful at having to lose such a rare bird in his collection, but he’s hardly at a loss. I’ve given him enough land and gold to keep his descendants in the lap of luxury for centuries to come. This Firebird has to be the costliest animal on this continent.
“You will take the very best care of her, won’t you?” Lord Gavin asks. “She’s a delicate creature and very selective of what she eats and drinks. I only fed her special water from a spring I have imported from Maroon Moors. And she will not eat mice or larvae.”
I resist the urge to roll my eyes and nod at Thomas to takes the bird away. He bows to me then leaves the room with the Firebird in hand. Lord Gavin looks forlorn as his former pet disappears. I would almost feel sorry for him if my wallet hadn’t been so diminished.
