Perhaps it was the way his eyes kindled with anger instantly, or it was the look of sheer horror that came across Corinne’s face that made Ashley cringe. Her heart pounded, the adrenaline pumping faster.

Mr. Miller was saying, “I feel very insulted that you’re even suggesting something like that, Mr. Baker. What gives you the impression that I would stare at your wife beyond what was necessary when my beautiful wife is seated right here beside me?”

He paused, allowing a few fleeting seconds to pass between them. “Mr. Baker, are you in any way suggesting that your wife is more beautiful than mine?”

He spoke with an air of extra importance and a rogue touch to it. It sounded oddly familiar. It reminded Ashley of someone she had met once, someone whom she had spent the past seventeen years of her life trying to forget.
