Chapter 65. Under Their Spell

Alpha Kayden and I sat on opposite ends of a cold bench, just far enough to avoid speaking, just close enough to feel the weight of what was coming. Officers moved in and out of Kate’s apartment like clockwork, oblivious to the storm brewing between us. We couldn’t move yet. Not until they were gone.
Kayden’s eyes scanned the air, sharp, focused, but distant—lost in thought. In his hand, he turned a small, dirt-smeared locket over and over, his thumb grazing its surface as if searching for answers. Answers I wasn’t sure he wanted to find.
“What else did you find?” His voice cut through the silence, startling me. I fumbled, almost spilling my coffee, the heat steadying me for a second. His voice always carried that authority, always making me feel small.
“Yeah…” I whispered, unsure if I should say more.
“What are you waiting for?” His tone darkened, eyes narrowing as he looked at me. “For me to ask and then for you to answer?
