Chapter 15. Anguish

My eyes peel open to a bar of light, attempting to blind me from a tear in the tent. I shield it with my palm as the smell of some spice I cannot name seeps into my nostrils. I can hear the sound of chirping birds and whistling winds, but the soft fur bedding on which I lay comforts me the most.

I let out a sigh, purring on the bed, willing my body to cooperate with my mind, but a feeling of warmth suddenly envelopes me. I sit up, turning to see who lies beside me. Her chest rises and falls, her body draped with a sheer piece of clothing, barely concealing her derriere.

Slowly, flashes of what happened the previous night begin to recollect in my head. I bedded this woman and spent the night in her tent. My face sinks into my palm.

How could I? Especially after seeing the look on Karen’s face. Her eyes were smart with tears, her face flushed red. And just as her tears were about to slide down, she whipped around, striding away.
