“I’m sorry, I’m sorry… I’m sorry,” I repeated over and over, my words breaking through the tears as Asher and I clung to each other. Our sobs were quiet, restrained, because it was late, and I knew Mom and Dad were fast asleep. The last thing we wanted was to wake them up and have them worrying over us. They would, without a doubt, fuss endlessly if they knew we were crying, and we couldn’t bear to add that burden to them.
Asher shook his head, loosening his grip and pulling back just enough to place his trembling hands on my cheeks. His tear-streaked face was a mix of sadness and determination as he spoke, his voice cracking between words.
“You… you don’t have to say sorry, Lee,” he whispered, shaking his head again. “You helped me so much… as Ashton… and yourself as Kate. You’ve done so much, even when… even when I didn’t help you. So please… don’t apologize.”
