Chapter 10
The drive to the country house was a long tiring ride. Occasionally, Henry would try to make a conversation. He asked about the twin siblings and told Kendra about his short but pleasant interaction with Eve at Gregory’s office. Kendra, however, was clearly not particularly in a chatty mood. Her recent encounter with her aunt, Althea, hadn’t gone as smoothly as she’d hoped—just like every other encounter in the time past. Althea despised Kendra, and anyone with intact eyes could see it. As a child, Kendra had simply assumed her aunt’s ill feelings toward her were born out of the unhealthy competitive relationship between her and Dorothea.
This line of thought was quickly disputed when Kendra attained her teenage years. It was, in fact, an incident involving Althea and her ex-spouse, Owen, that led Kendra to finally leave her family behind in San Francisco.
