Chapter 11

“Oh,” Dorothea seemed rather shocked by Kendra’s question. Her eyes narrowed as though she were trying to see her daughter more clearly.

“You don’t have to. I just thought maybe you’d be excited to meet your grandkids. It’s really not a big deal—”

“Of course, I’m excited,” Dorothea cut Kendra off as she turned around to face her, “I’d love to come with you.”

Kendra nodded and got into the backseat of the car as Dorothea went back inside to grab a few things. It did not take long for her to come jogging down the front steps with a black maxi tote bag hung carelessly on her inner elbow.

Alvin brought the car to the front of the house, and Dorothea hopped in.

“Thank you, Kendra,” she said. Kendra was not sure what exactly her mother was grateful for, but she preferred not to ask. It had been a swarm of too many emotions to deal with at once. Kendra gave her mother a small smile and turned to her side of the car.
