They reached the house just as the smell of breakfast wafted through the air. Maddie took a deep breath, trying to steady her thoughts before stepping inside. The comforting aroma of pancakes and bacon made her stomach rumble, but that was not all. 

It was all a small reminder of the simple pleasures amidst what was going on in her head and heart. 

Jacob opened the door for her, and she gave him a grateful smile before walking in. The kitchen was a hive of activity. Lara and the others were setting the table with Maddie’s father. Her eyes locked with the guy and he smiled at her before nodding to the other side of the room.
