How could they have left her to suffer alone, to fend for herself in a world that had shown her more than cruelty than kindness? She had to watch other kids get picked up from school by their parents but never got to experience that once.

“Maddie, all I can say is sorry. We did what we thought was best, and honestly, we don’t regret it,” Damien said, his eyes getting red and teary. 

Maddie scoffed in disbelief. “Of course, you would say something like this.” She shook her head, her heart aching. “I need to leave.” She turned around, more tears spilling from her eyes. She could not hold them back anymore.
