Chapter 66
Mara's POV
Black Hollow's gate stood open when we arrived. That was a relief until I saw the people waiting inside it.
Denholm, the quartermaster, had brought families down from the eastern cottages. Blankets and seed sacks lay piled beside the well. A boy sat on top of a traveling trunk, holding a kettle because his mother hadn't been able to fit it inside. The ward along the ridge had failed again while we were on the road.
Ronan dismounted and went to the boy first. “Is everyone from the cottages here?”
“My uncle is at the fence with Caldor,” he said. “They told us to wait until we can go back.”
“I'll see what they need.”
The boy looked at him for a moment, then offered him the kettle. Ronan took it solemnly and set it down where it wouldn't fall.
