Another figure had joined her. It was Carrie. That was his cue to leave. His expression hardened slightly without him knowing it as he stepped back fully into the dark, turning away from the building without hesitation this time. That way, by the time Carrie would look out properly, there would be nothing there to see.
No silhouette of him, no movement and absolutely no trace of him. Just an empty street. He walked off, hands tucked into his pockets, his pace steady but his mind anything but it.
He had told himself he wasn’t going to come back, he knew that. He also knew that was a lie. Because even now, as he disappeared down the street, one thought stayed with him, stubborn and unwanted.
He had waited all that time… just to see her.
