Chapter 66
Later that night, when it was quieter, Liana stood by her window. She wasn’t planning to but had found herself lost in a show Carrie had introduced her to. She had just gotten up for water, but somehow, she ended up there, fingers lightly pulling the curtain aside.
That was when she caught sight of it. A figure just downstairs, across the street from her building. Still, but leaning slightly like someone who had been standing there for a while.
At first, she thought her eyes were playing tricks on her. The streetlight didn’t hit that part of the road properly, leaving most of it swallowed in shadow when it was nighttime.
But then, a small glow from what seemed like a lighter briefly came from that direction. She soon realized it was a cigarette been lit. The ember lit up just enough to outline the shape of a face for a second before fading again.
Her chest tightened. Cain? She didn’t need to see clearly to recognize him. She knew.
“Carrie,” she called,
