Chapter 20
The environment was completely dark when Elizabeth entered; she felt the darkness denser than outside, and she didn't like that feeling at all. Careful not to trip over anything, she walked to Peter's bed, who was peacefully asleep with Mark sitting in a chair beside him. Elizabeth smiled, hoping that her friendships would be as enduring as theirs and filled with the same loyalty.
She approached Mark and tried to gently take the book he had in his hands, being careful not to wake him. Her efforts were in vain because even with the slightest movement, he opened his eyes wide.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to wake you," she apologized.
"Don't worry, I was in an uncomfortable position; I'm glad you did," he thanked, straightening up in the chair.
"How long has he been asleep?" she asked, pointing to Peter.
"About half an hour."
