Chapter 62
“I’ve been looking for you. Tonight we have dinner with Nick and Dallas Sykes. Nikki and Aiden are coming, too.”
“Okay,” he says. “What time?”
“At seven. Just down the street at Cut 360.”
The conversation feels strange and forced. I can’t tell if something is actually wrong or if it’s just my anxiety coloring everything.
“Sounds good. Why don’t you come down around a quarter to seven? We’ll walk. It’ll be a good night.”
I nod and, before I can stop myself, blurt, “You weren’t in your office before.”
“No,” he says. “I was out.”
“So I assumed. Where did you go?”
“Nowhere in particular.”
“With Megan.” I try to sound neutral, but my voice comes out flat.
Marcus looks at me, tilts his head slightly. Maybe I’m squinting—or maybe I’m imagining it.
“Yes,” he replies calmly. “With Megan.”
We’re blocking foot traffic; a tall man in an expensive suit shoots me an irritated look. I don’t care. Now I’m sure the conversation
