“Hello, Mr. Aldridge? Are you still there?” I heard a faint voice and snapped out of my trance.

“Huh? Yes, I'm sorry. What were you saying?” I still couldn't digest the fact that Veronica was kidnapped. It was like the ground below my feet just disappeared into despair.

“You are still in shock, aren't you?” I remained quiet, so she spoke further, “Geez, why did you even hurt her if you love her that much?”

I chuckled bitterly. “I don't know. I'm stupid.” Of course, it was my fault that something horrible happened to Veronica. I shouldn't have listened to the blackmailer and kicked Veronica out. If she was here with me, I would have let nothing happen to her.
