I had just finished my rounds and was walking toward my office when the hospital intercom crackled to life.

‘Emergency incoming critical condition. All available trauma surgeons to ER.’

I groaned and turned around just in time for a nurse to rush toward me. “Doctor Lena, we need you.”

“What’s the situation?” I asked as she led me to the operating room.

“Possible internal bleeding, multiple medical complications in the past.”

“Sounds like it’s going to be a tough one.”
