The moment we arrived back at the Anderson residence, the weight of the loss settled heavily over everyone. The house that once felt powerful and imposing now felt suffocatingly silent.
Our lawyer stood stiffly in front of us, his shoulders tense.
“I’m sorry,” he said, breaking the silence. “There was nothing more I could do. The evidence was airtight. Lena was innocent from the start and besides, the point of this trial was to expose the truth.”
Grandfather’s cane struck the floor once. “You’re right. The truth is all we care about,” he said with no emotions. “You may leave.”
The lawyer bowed slightly and left the room. The door closing behind him echoed louder than it should have.
