Chapter 21. That’s Not the Real Reason

Amelia’s POV
“Are you kidding me, sweetheart?” Adrian cut me off, his tone turning sharper, his patience fraying. “Pissing contest? You were drowning. What the hell was I supposed to do? Not jump in?”
I recoiled slightly, the words stinging, and for some reason, maybe it was the fact that he called me a ridiculous nickname that made my foolish heart jump, the anger inside me surged. “And thanks for jumping in! But I don’t need your pity.”
Adrian’s hand shot out, gripping my chin with a force that left no room for resistance. He tilted my head up, forcing me to meet his eyes. His touch was firm, and commanding, but there was something deeper in it—something almost desperate, like he couldn’t help but touch me. I couldn’t look away.
“You’re so fucking stubborn and infuriating” He whispered, “I didn’t do it for your thanks. I don’t need that from you.” His eyes softened as they moved to my trembling hands, and then back up to my face. “B
