Right. I shouldn’t have sat here.
The second Adrian and Janelle slid into the seats across from me, side by side like a perfectly coordinated couple, I knew I had made the worst decision of my life. And that was saying something, considering my history of bad impulsive decisions.
I stabbed at my lunch, pretending to be totally unbothered, but the problem was—I was bothered. Hyper-aware, actually. Every movement, every glance, every slight shift in Adrian’s expression. It was like my brain had decided to fixate on him just to torture me.
Darren, completely oblivious, kept cracking jokes, his arm casually draped over my chair. Everyone laughed—except me. Not because I didn’t find it funny, but because every time Darren leaned in a little closer, I felt like my skin was too tight like I was being smothered. Mostly, all I wanted to do was stand up and flee from this table.
