Chapter 149. After Effects
Caspian walked through a dimly lit passage in the building to Margret’s room. He wore a distressed expression, the warm radiance of the candles along the passage walls illuminating the sadness and worry in his eyes. He could remember his encounter with her in the restroom—how she screamed like she had seen some kind of ghost, how she shivered and tightened her grip on his arm, how she sobbed silently, pleading with him not to leave her alone. He barely managed to hold back his tears during the meeting.
He got to her room’s door and found her personal maid standing before it, holding a tray with a bowl of rice and soup sitting on it. The maid held up the tray with her right hand and reached for the door’s handle with her left.
