Chapter 44. Fire

Anna looked up at Lucien and noticed the happy expression on his face change after he picked up his call.

“What is it?” she asked after the call, but he just shook his head slowly.

“It’s nothing.” He didn’t want to worry her. “You like this place?” He cupped her face.

Anna tilted her head, hesitating like she was going to say no. Lucien needed her to say yes. He didn’t want her to remain where she lived. Whoever wanted her kidnapped could come back for her there.

“Well, it’s nice,” he heard her say.

“Great. I’ll ask Charles to fix it up with furniture and other things so you can start staying here from tomorrow.” He leaned in and left a peck on her lips, but she noticed something was wrong.

“Lucien,” she paused, their lips still close.
