Chapter 61
Audrey slipped into the room and slid the door shut quietly. Gen was there, asleep next to the child. It must have been terrible, knowing the kid she had taken care of had been in such a terrible accident. Dom was still pushing buttons to see that the culprit was caught, but so far, nothing seemed to be happening.
As she drew closer, she felt Gen stir. She really felt bad; it had been three days already, and the woman had barely left the hospital at all. She looked at the child, also asleep. Poor kid. She could see the bruises on her neck that were just starting to heal. Why would anyone run a child over?
“Drey?” Gen’s sleepy voice pulled her out of her thoughts.
“Hi,” she whispered. “I’m sorry I woke you up.”
“No, no.” She stood up. “Why are you here?”
“I heard about your niece’s accident. I thought to drop by and express my sympathies.”
“Oh, Drey, you didn’t have to.” Gen sighed.
“I did. You’re family now, so your family is family.”
