Chapter 63. Nothing Was Certain
Shawn pushed through the office door, only to be startled by the sight of figures in black suits waiting in front of another officer’s desk. He sighed softly as the figures, Veronica’s subordinates, immediately nodded politely at him.
“Detective,” they greeted in unison.
“Oh, hello,” Shawn nodded stiffly.
The officer at the front desk signaled to Shawn with his eyes and nodded to the left several times. Shawn understood immediately.
“Mrs. Mayor is expecting me, isn’t she?” Shawn asked the group of suits.
They responded with nods.
Reluctantly, Shawn stepped into one of the examination rooms, the only privacy in the office. When Shawn opened the door, he saw Veronica casually waiting inside. She had her legs crossed, and her hands were busy scrolling through her cell phone screen.
When she saw Shawn, Veronica put her phone down on the table. Her face was flat, showing no expression.
Carefully, Shawn sat down in front of Veronica.
