Chapter 13. The Exiled Guard

The tavern turned out to be a nice place and not as frightening as I had imagined. Clarisa also looked beautiful; she was a young woman with a pleasing face who was attracting many glances. I didn’t want to ask her about her romantic life; we didn’t have that much trust yet; the time would come.
Jacob had to leave for a meeting with one of the southern rulers, so we would meet after dinner, which gave me more time.
The tavern was a large building with a capacity for over fifty people. The tables and chairs were orderly and in good condition. It seemed like a well-kept and clean place.
We looked for a table to sit at, finding a perfect spot next to a window, and I tried not to make eye contact with anyone to avoid risks.
“It’s a nice place,” I said to Clarisa, looking around. It was picturesque and even seemed touristy; there were many travelers.
