Chapter 16. Bargain
DOVE
After discussing it for an interminable time, I managed to convince my mother that it was best to get out of that mess. My heart was broken, and it would be worse when I had to part from Jacob, but the evidence proved that he wasn’t who he claimed to be by my side.
I felt naïve, even though he had confessed to me that he was actually a villain, not hiding from the start. It was my bad habit of idealizing things as if I lived in a fairy tale romance with a happy ending.
I remembered when I walked down the aisle, discovering my fiancé for the first time; the attraction was instant. He was so handsome; I couldn’t resist his charm. I cried in my room while packing my things, including the ring he gave me that night when we were just getting to know each other. I smiled lovingly as I gazed at it; he always had those gestures that captivated me.
My luggage was light; then, I would prepare a carriage and drive it myself if necessary; I wouldn’t be afraid.
