Chapter 17. Trapped

I didn’t have windows in my cell, which made me lose track of time. Judging by my deep sleep, I assumed it would soon be dawn. I couldn’t sign the letter; I couldn’t lie that way, even if it was necessary to do so. Katherine would return in a few hours for the answer, and I should give it to her anyway.
I was scared of her macabre plan; she had probably had it in mind for a long time and took advantage of the opportunity. She wanted to get rid of Jacob, avenge the death of her fiancé and have the throne to herself. This was a twisted intrigue that I couldn’t understand, but still, I was caught up in it, with the letter in my hands, tempted to tear it into a thousand pieces.
Time passed slowly, especially when I started thinking about the beauty of the past. Concern tensed my bones; the fact that now my family was in even more danger than before. How could my mother be so naive? I couldn’t understand it; she had handed herself over to the beasts.
