Chapter 169. Shattered Trust
CLARISA
I was on my way to Chris’s room with a bouquet of carnations in my hand that I had bought at a flower shop on the outskirts of town when I was overcome with fear to leave without stopping. Ever since the doctor had told me I had woken up, my nerves had been on edge. I wanted to wait until Dove came to see him so I would not have to run into her. Heaven knows how hard it was for me to hide the disappearance of the tiara; I was a terrible liar, and even more so to her, who was not only my queen but also my friend.
But it was not guilt that I felt in my heart, but the fear of being discovered and hanged on the gallows. I continued walking hurriedly and bumped into one of the guards guarding the medical room.
“Is there anyone in this room?” I asked, pointing to the room where Chris was laid to rest.
“No, only the doctor is there at the moment.” The soldier replied dryly and withdrew, without any sympathy.
