Ian was in the worst possible mood, kicking at every stone in his path and barely writing anything down. Sallie, on the other hand, was in high spirits. First she sang melodic, romantic songs about travelers having happy adventures. Then she started telling jokes so bad that I had to laugh at them anyway.

I felt quite lonely, not having anyone to talk to, with Ian so upset and Sallie looking as if she had just stepped out of a nonsense story. But they were my travelling companions and I had to accept them as they were. Sometimes I remembered Jason, because he and I had been on many expeditions together, although most of them had ended badly.

I remembered that when I was captured, the cult had tortured me so badly that I thought I would definitely die. I hoped Colbert’s people wouldn’t be like that with the girl, Dove’s sister had done nothing wrong to deserve such suffering.
