Chapter 9. Curse
DOVE
I fell to the ground, slumped and sad, disappointed in those guards who I thought would protect me. But I was even angrier with myself for not being able to defend myself; I had to get used to surprise attacks and be ready when they happened.
The women were still there, looking at me and laughing like schoolchildren teasing. My inner fire ignited like a wildfire, and I got up despite my pain and bruises.
I walked towards them to return the insult, but the guard stopped me.
“Is that your loyalty?” I asked, looking him in the eyes. I had to know; I would dismiss him as soon as I had the opportunity.
“You are not the queen.”
His answer made my blood boil, and I left as soon as I could, seeking refuge in my room. There I found Clarisa, arranging my clothes and changing the bed sheets. These were tasks that I could do, but they wouldn’t let me.
