"You sound like a mom," I remarked.
“Maybe all you need is to be coddled,” she said.
Despite my gruff demeanor, I was profoundly moved by her encouraging words and acts of goodwill. I only agreed to try it out, desperate to avoid further embarrassment.
We were led by Crystal to the spot I had reserved. Having the space rented out was a source of happiness for me. It wouldn't look good if word got out that Richmond's most influential doctor couldn't ride a bike.
She went and got two bicycles, set the seats at appropriate heights, and showed them how to ride with balance and pedals. She waited patiently by my side, cheering me on whenever I felt discouraged and holding me steady whenever my legs felt like they would give out.
She stifled her laughing and added, "Oh my God, Adam, relax."
I moaned, "Stupid bike, stay still; this is ridiculous."
