Chapter 242. Telling the Truth

The silence on the other end of the line was deafening. For a moment, I thought he had hung up. My heart pounded as I waited, dread filling every inch of my body. I knew he had not hung on the line because I could hear his heavy breathing. 

“Lisa… Mark’s voice came through, low and strained. I could tell he was processing what I’d just said, probably replaying it over and over in his head, the same way I had. “Tell me you’re joking.” He laughed without humor. 

“I didn’t…” My voice broke and a small sob pushed through before I continued, “I didn’t mean for it to happen, I swear to you,” I rushed out, desperate to fill the silence and explain myself. “It just…it was a moment, and I—I feel terrible about it. I know it was wrong. I don’t even know why I’m telling you, but I can’t keep this from you.”
